ABOUT

FullSizeRender-1.jpg

I am in my second year of the Music Theory and Cognition PhD program at Northwestern University, and currently hold degrees in music theory and composition from the College of Wooster (B.M.), and music theory, from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (M.M.). I have been under the instruction of Drs. Jack Gallagher, Christopher White, and Richard Ashley.

For the last several years I have had a keen interest in listeners' perceptions of musical events, and most recently, in listeners' expectation of music. I have focused on this topic in my graduate study, where I have been able to present research at Language and Music Workshops, the Northeast Music Cognition Group conference, the Society for Music Perception and Cognition conference, and the Society for Music Theory conference.

I am passionate about and committed to the craft of teaching music theory. I have served as a graduate assistant at the University of Massachusetts, where I assisted in teaching Music Theory I and II topics to undergraduates. I was also a teaching assistant for Theory IV at The College of Wooster, where I planned and taught lessons in chromatic harmony and guided students in analysis on a daily basis. Teaching music theory has allowed me to reflect upon my own experiences in engaging with music theoretically, and consequently, to approach difficult topics creatively. To this end, I draw on my research expertise in teaching music theory, thus bridging the gap between scholarship and pedagogy .
